MAIN GLOSSARY

Sigmoidoscope
A long, lighted tube attached to a video camera that is used to investigate the first (lower) third of the colon (called the sigmoid colon) during a procedure called a sigmoidoscopy. There are two types of sigmoidoscopes: Rigid and Flexible. Flexible sigmoidoscopes are able to bend, while rigid sigmoidoscopes are unable to bend. Colon cancer screening is most often performed with a flexible sigmoidoscope.
