GLOSSARY
Pancreas
An organ that is located in the abodomen near the stomach. It makes several chemicals and sends them either to the small intestine, where they aid in digesting food, or to the bloodstream, where they regulate how much sugar is available in the blood. One of the chemicals made by the pancreas is insulin, which helps cells take up sugar after a meal. People with diabetes mellitus either don't produce insulin or can't respond to the insulin that the pancreas makes. Their cells are unable to use sugar for fuel, resulting in high levels of sugar accumulating in the blood.
