GLOSSARY
Insulin
A substance made by cells in the pancreas. Insulin helps control the amount of glucose (a type of sugar) in the blood. When the blood contains high levels of glucose, such as after a meal, insulin helps cells remove glucose from the blood and use it for energy. People with diabetes have high levels of glucose in their blood either because they fail to make insulin, or their cells do not respond to insulin properly. One type of diabetes treatment involves injecting insulin into the body to help keep glucose levels in the normal range.
