MAIN GLOSSARY

Hemochromatosis
An inherited disease in which the body absorbs more iron than it needs. The excess iron is stored in various organs throughout the body, including the liver, kidney, and pancreas. Hemochromatosis can lead to diabetes, heart disease, liver disease, arthritis, impotence, and a bronzed skin color. These symptoms can be avoided by regularly drawing blood. Hemochromatosis is inherited in an autosomal recessive manner, which means that a person must inherit a mutated copy of the gene from both parents in order to be at risk.
