MAIN GLOSSARY

Colectomy
A surgical procedure in which a doctor removes the patient's colon. People who have their entire colon removed then have a surgical procedure to allow waste (stool) to empty from the small bowel to the rectum or anus, or to empty from the small bowel through a surgically created opening called a colostomy. One situation where a colectomy is often done is when a person has extensive colon cancer or a very large number of polyps (which often become cancerous) throughout the colon.
