MAIN GLOSSARY

APC gene
The adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) gene normally makes a protein that prevents cells in the colon from becoming cancerous. If it is inherited in an altered form (mutated), it usually causes a hereditary cancer syndrome called familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP). People with FAP have an extremely high likelihood of developing colon cancer. One particular type of mutation in this gene does not cause FAP, but instead causes a mild (familial) increase in the risk of developing colon cancer in the family members who inherit the mutation.
