MAIN GLOSSARY

Antibody
A protein made by cells of the immune system. Antibodies circulate in the blood and help protect the body from bacteria, viruses, or foreign particles. Each antibody recognizes and binds to only one particular type of molecule on the foreign body. The molecule that the antibody recognizes is called the antigen. When an antibody recognizes an antigen, it activates the immune system to fight the foreign body. In this way, antibodies help the immune system recognize and defend against possible disease.
