Breast-Specific Gamma Imaging (BSGI, screening)

BSGI is a type of molecular breast imaging (MBI) technique. It is used as a diagnostic follow-up to a suspicious mammogram and as a screening method for high-risk women, including women with dense breast tissue and women who have had a prior biopsy or other breast procedure that makes standard mammographic detection difficult. BSGI is a "functional" imaging method. It looks at metabolic activity in the breast tissue. This makes is complementary to "anatomical" imaging methods like mammography and breast ultrasound that look at tissue structures. BSGI generates fewer false-positives than breast MRI and so results in fewer unnecessary biopsies. It is also less expensive than breast MRI. With BSGI, patients receive a pharmaceutical tracer called technetium (Tc99m) sestamibi that is absorbed by cells throughout the body. Cancer cells, due to their increased rate of metabolic activity, absorb a greater amount of the tracer than healthy cells and so appear as dark "hot spots" on the image. BSGI is also known by the names molecular breast imaging (MBI), sestamibi, scintimammography and miraluma.
